It's The 80's Baby!

Last night we had a Volunteer Appreciation Party at our church and the theme was the 80's. All I have to say is that it was AWESOME and people were dressed really cool. Of course I got my 80's outfit, as you can see in the picture, the other picture is of all the staff at church. Our worship pastor Jeff wrote this awesome song and they made the music video for it, you can see it here. We love our church, not many churches out there grasp the concept that God is fun like our church does. We had an awesome time.

If you are unable to see video because you don't have Quicktime Player you can either download it for free or see the video at our church website here

Not even in Minnesota!

In my last post I mentioned that I wasn't going to have too much stuff to blog about unless interesting things started to happen. Well, I think I jinxed myself. Most likely you saw it in the news, yesterday the weather was crazy here. Just look at the picture. We got snow, probably like three inches where we were but there were some areas that got like twenty two inches. The wind was a killer, gusty winds over 50 mph, there were some damages and of course schools were closed and so were roads. It was just insane, it was one of those days when I wish I were in Minnesota weather, it was just crazy. Today is much nicer, 45 degrees and calm and peeks of sun.

I remember mentioning in a previous post that people talk about the weather when they have nothing to talk about, but I think this is a very unique situation. Let's see what other interesting things occur.

Colorado Springs

I'm in Colorado Springs for the week doing some training for my work. Beautiful place, no doubt, the view from my hotel room is Pikes Peak. The weather is not the best but coming from Minnesota anything is good. Colorado Springs is kinda' like a big town, there is really not much to do, most of its tourist attraction is all the outdoors opportunities. I don't have a problem with that, but I spend the whole day on class and then by the time I get out at 5pm what can you do? It's also hard when you are by yourself and you don't know anybody around. But overall it has been a good trip so far. I can't wait to get back to my wife though and hey! I can always take free a trip to anywhere. On the other hand it kinda' affects my blog-productivity, so that will explain my lack of posts for this week; unless interesting things start happening, you never know. Hopefully I'll make it to the Garden of the Gods, which I hear is a really cool place to check out and maybe the Air Force Academy, which is famous for its Cadet Chapel, one of the most beautiful chapels in the country.

Texan Pride

A little Texan joke doesn't hurt from time to time....

Long-Distance Calls
A man in Topeka, Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and worked east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued by a sign which read: "$10,000 a minute." Seeking out the Pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The Pastor explained that the golden phone was, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he paid the price he could talk directly to God. The man thanked the Pastor and continued on his way.As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Greensboro, Tampa and all around the United States, he found more phones with the same sign and got the same answer from each Pastor. Finally, he arrived in Texas. Upon entering a church in Dallas, behold, he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read: "Calls: 35 cents." Fascinated, he asked to talk to the Pastor. "Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone. I have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 35 cents. Why?" The Pastor, smiling benignly, replied, "Son, you're in Texas now... It's a local call."

Don't Try This At Home.

I found this video on this blog (if you don't understand spanish don't visit the link), I thought it was cool so I decided to post it in my blog. You know, us guys like to wreck things.
Basically some crazy people wanted to know what would happen if they crank the jet engines on a Boeing 747 to the max and drive a car behind the the aircraft. I'm not going to spoil the fun for you, you'll have to see it for yourself but I think it was pretty amazing. Enjoy!

Shoes for South Africa

Carolyn belongs to a Small Group called the Giving Club. They meet every other week and they come up with ideas to bless others through giving. They have come up with some pretty cool ideas so far. Their latest project is a shoe drive for South Africa, they were able to get more than 80 pairs of shoes, which I think was awesome. She is now ready to send the box to our friends in YWAM Bethlehem, South Africa. When we were in South Africa we (the ywam base) used to get a lot of shoes donated to the base and then we would give the shoes to the people in the townships, it was amazing to bless others in such way. It's cool to think Carolyn's group will do just that through this project but this time from the other side of the world.

I think missions requires willingness and determination. Doesn't matter where you are or who you are, you can always impact somebody's life if you really want to.

Nerd Wannabe??

I am nerdier than 35% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!

So I took the Nerd Test and my score was, as you can see, 35. That's not bad, I wouldn't want it to be any lower or higher. So, basically I'm one third nerd. How nerd are you?

100 Visits...or Not?

Yesterday my blog passed the 100 visits mark...yay...."I would like to thank all my colleagues, producers and directors and everybody in the academy....also I would like to thank everybody who supported me and my family and my beautiful wife....mom and dad I love you!!...God bless everybody" (orchestra starts playing, indicating my time is over).
After doing a detailed analysis of all the activity I learned that about 80% of all the traffic in my blog has been me, myself and I checking my own blog over and over again. So I guess those 100+ visits are not legitimate. So, the lesson learned is not to visit my own blog otherwise I throw my stats off. I guess I will celebrate again on 200!!...yay!!

Virginia Tech

There are no words to express our feelings for what happened in VA. Nothing makes sense. We pray God would bring healing and encouragement to many people through this event, and that many would come to know Him better and find refuge in Him. In moments like this we should stop, reflect and understand that without God our lives are meaningless.

Long Live Chipotle

I luuuuuve Chipotle. If you know me, you know Chipotle is one of my favorite places to go eat. The place is cool, always playing good music. The food is "real", you know what I mean if you are aware of the food crisis in this country. Flavors are just right and the best part of all is cheap! What else can you ask for?
Chipotle might be far from being authentic Mexican food, but those mega-burritos or "San Francisco Style" and the guacamole are the best around. I read this article in Wikipedia and you can read about some really interesting details about Chipotle, for example, their locations are mostly built with recycled materials; isn't that cool? Another good news I learned is that it's not owned by the clowns of McDonald's anymore, way to go! These days, you don't want to have anything to do with those nasty clowns. Today is free burrito tax day! Every year they give away free burritos on tax day, you even have to fill out a form that looks like a tax form but not that complicated...of course to get the form you should have gone during this past weekend and I did of course! So you know what I'm eating today. The best food around!!

Bloopers

I got an email with these church bulletin bloopers, I believe they are real...

- The pastor will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing, "Break Forth Into Joy."
- A songfest was hell at the Methodist church Wednesday.
- Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community.
- The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The Congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.
- Thursday night Potluck Supper. Prayer and medication to follow.

I've seen this.

I read this article on CNN about how they are running out of plots in the cemeteries in Jo'burg (Johannesburg, South Africa) so the Mayor is asking people to consider "nontraditional" burials because they are running out of space.
We lived in Bethlehem, South Africa; small town three hours south of Jo'Burg, very small town. Sometimes we would drive by the cemetery and it was so overwhelming not only seeing how large it was the cemetery but how there were like over 30 new graves everyday!
South Africa is one of the countries with highest percentage of people suffering with AIDS in the world. If you don't know what to look for you will think everybody looks normal; however when you drive by a cemetery you see the shocking reality of AIDS. I can't explain the feeling you get when you pass by a cemetery everyday and you see so many, many new graves.
I always wondered if they ever have to opportunity to make a decision for Jesus, if anybody ever shared with them about Salvation in Christ. I think God can totally reverse the reality of AIDS in South Africa. It has happened in other african countries where they applied biblical principles to fight AIDS and it the levels have dropped 20%.
God is just amazing.

Life Statement

Recently I was at a leadership retreat with Jeff Grenell as the speaker. One of the first things we were asked to do was to write our life statement. "That's Cheesy" was what first crossed my mind, but when I stopped and thought: what is it that defines me? what do I devote myself to? how do I describe my life in a sentence? I then made sure I chose my words carefully. Yes, writing your life statement can be cheesy but if you want to put your life into perspective and discover what is it that you live for, then you better grab a pen and a paper. What does really matters? Are you really living your life statement? or are you just wishing you could live your life statement?
The last thing I want is to look back and wish I did this or that. That's why a life statement gives you the target to aim your life at.
My life statement is:
"To be real and live my life to the fullest, putting God first above all things"
Do you know what you're living for?

Writer's Block already?

Not much has been going on around here and I don't want to be like other bloggers whom post lyrics for their favorite songs whenever they have nothing to write. I can't believe is still snowing in April, but I don't want to be like other bloggers who blog about the weather when they have nothing to blog about. The president is not getting any better nor is the war in Iraq, but again I don't want to be like other bloggers that talk what a horrible president we have when they have nothing to write about. My job is ok, I wish I made more money or at least get paid what I deserve, but guess what? you got it, I'm not going to complain about my job like other blog writers do when their imagination is gone.
I attended a Writing Seminar once and they told us that whenever you experience writers block you get yourself out of it by just writing whatever, in case you haven't noticed that's what I'm trying to do but is not working so far, so I guess that today I have nothing to write about...but I don't want to not write like other bloggers when they have nothing to write about.
By the way, my grandpa' used to say that when people talk about the weather is because they have nothing to talk about; I wonder how that applies to the weather guy?

Annoying Cellphone Guy

Last week at church Jeff wrote and sang this song called Annoying Cellphone Guy. Really good song, Phoebe style (I think). He did an excellent job. I really admire his creativity. Anyway, you got to see the video. You can either click here or in the player below click on, of course, Annoying Cellphone Guy Song. You can also listen or watch some other material in the player, is all good stuff. Hope you like it.

Good job Jeff!

Culture shock, Missions and Easter

This weekend was pretty busy. It didn't even feel like easter at all; at least for me. There were however a few interesting things that happened.

*On saturday I experienced something I haven't experience in a while. Culture shock, yea, It has been a while since moving here in 2003. Is funny though, when I first came here and started going to RVC I used to dress up every weekend for service. I remember feeling overdressed, then I started dressing more casual, you know trying to adjust.
On saturday when we went to church it felt so weird because everybody was all dressed up and I was just wearing jeans and sneakers, man, I was dressed so informal. I felt uncomfortable. It was funny. I mean what's the point?, anyways lets not go there...

*After church we had a meeting with Ron, Sandra and ten other people, most of them YWAMers whom are interested in the project of planting a base in Cuernavaca, Mexico. It was a really good meeting. Really cool to meet other people and share ideas and visions. It was so exciting to be part of that first meeting, Ron was thrilled. We had some snacks, we prayed and got to know each other better. We are so excited about Cuernavaca, although it seems far away is hard not to think about it. Can't wait to see what God has in store for us.

*Sunday was Family/Easter day. We got to do our traditional round of family visits. Good food and good conversations always a part of it.

Is still pretty cold for April, can't wait until it warms up, I have high expectations for the summer.

It's Google again...

I know some people are anti-google and some others like me love Google, I mean, I admire Google; they are always doing cool-fresh ideas. Today I opened up my Gmail account and there was a new feature called Google Reader. Now let me explain why I like this new feature. I'm one of those persons that has a routine every morning. I read several blogs and news websites. So you can imagine I go from website to website, from blog to blog. With Google Reader I can read all my favorites websites and blogs in one screen. I know there are feed readers available but I like how Google combines everything in one spot and still keep it simple. So with all that said, I think you will agree with me that this new feature is helpful for people like me. Of course to be able to enjoy this and many other Google cool-fresh-original features you must have a Google account, it used to be by invitation only but I think now is open for the public. I still have 90+ invitations left, so if you need one just post a comment with your email and I'll send it to you.

Pizza Luce

The other day I had to write a review for a school assignment. I decided to do a restaurant because even when I love movies, I don't know all the technical terms or things to look for when reviewing a movie. I heard a lot about this place called Pizza Luce, so I decided to take my wife on a date and in that way "kill two birds with one shot" like we say in Venezuela.
So here is my very first restaurant review ever in the history of my short life. Hope you like it.
-------------------------
-------------------------
Pizza Luce: You’ll either love it or hate it.

Located on Selby Avenue right off Lexington Avenue, Luce’s location is not the most attractive feature for those looking for cool surroundings; even though is not in a very busy section of Selby, parking can be a hassle. They have a very small alley on the side of the restaurant they call “parking lot” that can be uncomfortable to maneuver your car, that is if you are lucky enough to find a spot.
Luce’s new restaurant just opened in St. Paul, therefore the building is pretty new and clean; very simple decoration with art for sale hanging on the walls. Dim light and electro-alternative-jazz music sets the atmosphere. I got the impression the concept of the restaurant is to target the artsy-alternative crowd but it does a good job catering to the general crowd; whether you are going out with friends, spouse, family or just for a drink, Luce has a place for you.
One of the most talked about characteristics of Luce is the pizza. Make sure you are in the mood for experiencing new flavors; this is not your common pepperoni pizza joint. With names like Garlic Mashed Potato, Shrimp Al Pesto or Baked Potato Pizza you know this is going to be either really good or really bad. They also have a variety of salads, pasta and hoagies and quite a repertoire for veggie lovers. We ordered the Appetizer Sampler and a small Pizza Athena.
The sampler consists of two loaves of really good bread with four dips: Marinara sauce, Spinach artichoke, Sun-dried tomato with olives and bruschetta’s tomato topping; very flavorful selection with a fine taste. I have to recommend the spinach artichoke dip, definitely one of the best.
Very prompt our pizza arrived. The Pizza Athena combines the following ingredients: Fresh spinach, tomato, feta cheese, Calamata olives, artichoke hearts, red onion, Greek oregano and toasted garlic with mozzarella on bianca sauce. At first I wasn’t very excited about it but I have to admit it was a really good pizza despite the absence of any meat products.
The service wasn’t anything worth mentioning. I believe it could have been better. Our waitress wasn’t bad; she just wasn’t making the effort to give us excellent service.
If you are a budget conscious person, Pizza Luce is not the kind of place you go to eat every week let alone everyday, I think our meal was fairly small and we still got a bill for over $30. You might want to save it for a date night or special occasion. It might not even become your favorite restaurant but is worth the experience. I would definitely recommend this place and even go again myself.

We need more guys like Dr. Collins

I read this article in CNN and it was really encouraging to read Dr. Collins "testimony". For those who don't know about him, Dr. Collins is a renown scientist and the director of the Human Genome Project, basically the HGP was a group of scientists who spent 13 years mapping out the human DNA. A milestone in science's history.
It was really cool to read that 40% of scientist claim to believe in God. This a huge number and although is not the majority of scientists, it once again confirms my belief that God created science as well and the two can get along as long as science submits to God. I think in this life there are more things that require faith than things that can be explained scientifically.
Read the article, is pretty good.

Now that's different!

Now, I know this might not be the idea of going on a cruise ship for a lot of people but I think is really cool. I used to work aboard oil tankers and so far it has been my favorite job ever. I think cruise ships are a really cool experience but this idea of the container ships is just different, it shouldn't even be compared with cruise ships. I really wish I had the opportunity to do it. I think I will choose container ship over cruise ship, although I don't think my wife will like that idea...

They got me...

I was so excited on Sunday when I was reading Google's website about their new technological breakthrough. I was desperately looking for the way to get my hands on one of those kits. I mean, if somebody would be able to do that it would be Google, don't you think?
I have to say I felt a little bit disappointed when I realized it was an April's Fool Day prank. They also had another for Gmail users, they were offering Paper Archive.
I gotta say they got me and it was good.
